Title: 090819 I. Why do we gather weekly for worship? II. What does the NT say about what we should do when we gather? I. Why do we gather for worship weekly? • It’s normal! • It’s commanded! ...not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:25 • It’s necessary!
II. What does the NT say about what we should do when we gather? We Read the Word Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 1 Timothy 4:13 We Preach the Word! I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:   preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:1-2 ...From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets. Acts 28:23b We Pray the Word! First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people,  for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior. I Timothy 2:1-3 “On the day called Sunday there is a meeting in one place of those who live in cities or the country, and the letters of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read as long as time permits. When the reader has finished, the pastor in a discourse urges and invites us to the imitation of these noble things. Then we all stand up together and offer prayers. And, as said before, when we have finished the prayer, bread is brought, and wine and water, and the pastor similarly sends up prayers and thanksgivings to the best of his ability, and the congregation assents, saying the Amen.” -Justin Martyr, A.D. 155 We Sing the Word!  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
